Del Norte student Byamungu Fazili was honored during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 as a recipient of a $1,000 MLK scholarship sponsored by The Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Council. The scholarship program is intended for the recipients to continue to learn, understand and “promote Dr. King’s legacy on an ongoing basis.” In an excerpt from his essay on civil rights, diversity and community pride, Byamungu states: “When I start to think about the effect of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the difficulties he had, I see the importance of the work he did, because today America is a country of all people. That is why I am here also, and now we have freedom and a voice to speak.”
