Jack Vermillion: A Principal Who Leads with Heart
For over two decades, 1979 DNHS graduate Jack Vermillion has been more than just a principal—he’s been a mentor and the face of S.Y. Jackson Elementary. That personal touch has made him a trusted leader in Albuquerque Public Schools. His anti-bullying programs have gained national attention, and his collaborative leadership has shaped many young principals.
A Del Norte High School and UNM graduate, Vermillion never planned on teaching, but a friend’s suggestion led him to education. Now, after 23 years at S.Y. Jackson, he has hired nearly the entire staff, fostering a culture of teamwork and student-first focus. Unlike many principals, he personally gives school tours, strengthening ties with families. “It takes 15 minutes, but it’s good public relations,” he says. Despite S.Y. Jackson’s strong performance, he pushes for every student’s success. “Eighty-five percent are proficient in ELA (English Language Arts), but what about the other 15%? Those kids have names and faces.”
Set to retire in May 2026, Jack remains committed. “I love my job. I love what I do.” His passion has made a lasting impact on students, teachers, and families alike.
